I love writing because it gives me an opportunity to create new worlds with unique characters. Growing up in the foster care system, I was always moving around. New schools. New parents. New siblings. Everything was always new, and so was I. While my experience was far from positive, I developed a powerful imagination as a means to escape the tumultuous environment. I started writing early in grade school. Short stories and poems, mostly. Creating worlds filled with magic and mystery, I would pour my hopes and dreams onto notebook paper. It wouldn’t be until years later that I began thinking about the possibility of a career in writing, but the foundation for this goal was built early on.Now, as an adult, I still occasionally tap into that childhood fascination of the surreal. I find myself engrossed in the worlds I’ve created and the characters within. Every character has ties to reality. Perhaps they were inspired by real people with whom I’ve interacted. Others are representations of ideas and concepts—personifications of morality and, sometimes even evil characteristics of human behavior.
